Grid-connected PV inverters have traditionally been thought as active power sources with an emphasis on maximizing power extraction from the PV modules. Much of grid communication is performed over purpose-built communication networks owned and maintained by grid utilities. Broadly speaking, grid communication systems are comprised of multiple transport technologies and protocols carried by a variety of media.
4. Grid-connected inverter control techniques Although the main function of the grid-connected inverter (GCI) in a PV system is to ensure an efficient DC-AC energy conversion, it must also allow other functions useful to limit the effects of the unpredictable and stochastic nature of the PV source.
These will include Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, including latency, throughput, bandwidth, jitter, packet loss, availability, and security. With the above requirements known, another determining factor for selecting grid communications is the current state of communications technologies in place at the electric utility.
Auxiliary functions should be included in Grid-connected PV inverters to help maintain balance if there is a mismatch between power generation and load demand.
