Before making any claim of conformance to this Appendix, the user should consider verifying the most recent version of the listed Standards before performing any assessment or test.
This regulation entered into force on February 18, 2024, and will fully replace the previous Battery Directive by August 2025. It applies to all batteries sold in the EU, including industrial batteries used in energy storage systems. Substance restrictions: Limits on hazardous materials such as mercury, cadmium, and lead.
The most significant change in the new standard is the thermal diffusion test requirement. While the previous standard only required a warning signal five minutes before fire or explosion, the updated regulation mandates that batteries must not catch fire or explode, even during thermal runaway events.
Electrical energy storage equipment using lithium battery technology shall have a battery management system that ensures conformance to all requirements of AS IEC 62619:2023 or IEC 62619:2022. Conformance is checked by inspection and relevant tests. The requirements in this Appendix apply to batteries using lead acid chemistry.
However, the cause of that incident remains under investigation. Industry experts believe the new national standard safeguards battery safety through rigorous testing protocols, significantly alleviating public concerns about spontaneous combustion risks in electric vehicles.
